Who has to take the training?

  • Anyone involved in the sale of cannabis must have this certification. This includes managers and staff in cannabis stores. You must be at least 19 years old to sell cannabis in Manitoba, therefore the program is offered only to people 19 years of age or older.

I already took the Smart Choices liquor program, but now I want to work in the cannabis industry. Do I have to take this cannabis program?

  • Yes, you still must complete the Smart Choices Cannabis Retail Certification. This program is different from the Smart Choices Liquor Service and Retail Certification. Anyone involved in the sale of cannabis must have this cannabis certification.

How long is Smart Choices valid?

  • Your Smart Choices certification will be valid for five years. Your Smart Choice ID Card will have an expiry date printed on it and dated for five years from the date that you successfully complete the program.

How can I complete the program?

  • Smart Choices Cannabis Retail Certification is offered in class by inspectors from the Liquor, Gaming and Cannabis Authority (LGCA). Inspectors will work with cannabis stores to schedule and provide this training. After the inspector takes you through the program manual, visit SmartChoicesMB.ca to register and take a final test with 20 questions.

I own a licensed cannabis store. Is it my responsibility to make sure my staff have this training?

  • Yes, each licensee is responsible for making sure that anyone involved in the sale of cannabis has successfully completed an approved responsible sales program. Some licensees protect themselves by keeping copies of everyone's proof of certification (ID cards) in their employee files.
